New regime slabs (FY 2025-26)

Income up to ₹4 lakh is nil, ₹4-8 lakh is taxed at 5%, ₹8-12 lakh at 10%, ₹12-16 lakh at 15%, ₹16-20 lakh at 20%, ₹20-24 lakh at 25%, and anything above ₹24 lakh at 30%. A ₹75,000 standard deduction applies for salaried taxpayers, and taxable income up to ₹12 lakh is fully rebated under Section 87A.

Old regime slabs

Nil up to ₹2.5 lakh, 5% from ₹2.5-5 lakh, 20% from ₹5-10 lakh, and 30% above ₹10 lakh, with a Section 87A rebate zeroing out tax up to ₹5 lakh taxable income. The old regime is the only one that lets you claim HRA, 80C, home loan interest and most other deductions.

Getting your actual filing right

This calculator gives a slab-based estimate. Your actual liability also depends on capital gains, other income sources, and TDS already deducted — all reconciled when we prepare your income tax return, reviewed by a senior CA before filing.

Frequently asked questions

Which regime should I choose — old or new?

If your deductions (80C, 80D, HRA, home loan interest) comfortably exceed roughly ₹4-4.5 lakh, the old regime often wins. Without significant deductions, the new regime's lower slabs and ₹12 lakh rebate usually come out ahead. Run both in the calculator above to compare.

Is income up to ₹12 lakh really tax-free under the new regime?

Yes — under Section 87A, taxable income up to ₹12 lakh (₹12.75 lakh for salaried individuals after the ₹75,000 standard deduction) attracts a full rebate, bringing tax to zero. Marginal relief applies just above this threshold so tax doesn't jump sharply.

What is the standard deduction for FY 2025-26?

Salaried individuals get a standard deduction of ₹75,000 under the new regime and ₹50,000 under the old regime, deducted from gross salary before computing taxable income.

Does this calculator account for capital gains or other income?

No — this calculator estimates tax on regular income (salary/business) only. Capital gains are taxed separately at their own rates and aren't included in this slab-based estimate.
